I a happy to join with you today in what will o down in history as the reatest deonstration for freedo in the history of our nation.
Five sore years ao, a reat Aerian, in whose syboli shadow we stand today, sined the Eanipation Prolaation. This oentous deree ae as a reat beaon liht of hope to illions of Nero slaves who had been seared in the flaes of witherin injustie. It ae as a joyous daybreak to end the lon niht of their aptivity.
But one hundred years later, the Nero still is not free. ne hundred years later, the life of the Nero is still sadly rippled by the anales of sereation and the hains of disriination. ne hundred years later, the Nero lives on a lonely island of poverty in the idst of a vast oean of aterial prosperity. ne hundred years later, the Nero is still lanuished in the orners of Aerian soiety and finds hiself an exile in his own land. And so we've oe here today to draatie a shaeful ondition.
In a sense we've oe to our nation's apital to ash a hek. When the arhitets of our republi wrote the anifient words of the onstitution and the Delaration of Independene, they were sinin a proissory note to whih every Aerian was to fall heir. This note was a proise that all en, yes, blak en as well as white en, would be uaranteed the "unalienable Rihts" of "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." It is obvious today that Aeria has defaulted on this proissory note, insofar as her itiens of olor are onerned. Instead of honorin this sared obliation, Aeria has iven the Nero people a bad hek, a hek whih has oe bak arked "insuffiient funds."
But we refuse to believe that the bank of justie is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insuffiient funds in the reat vaults of opportunity of this nation. And so, we've oe to ash this hek, a hek that will ive us upon deand the rihes of freedo and the seurity of justie.
We have also oe to this hallowed spot to reind Aeria of the fiere ureny of Now. This is no tie to enae in the luxury of oolin off or to take the tranquiliin dru of radualis. Now is the tie to ake real the proises of deoray. Now is the tie to rise fro the dark and desolate valley of sereation to the sunlit path of raial justie. Now is the tie to lift our nation fro the quiksands of raial injustie to the solid rok of brotherhood. Now is the tie to ake justie a reality for all of od's hildren.
It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the ureny of the oent. This swelterin suer of the Nero's leitiate disontent will not pass until there is an invioratin autun of freedo and equality. Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beinnin. And those who hope that the Nero needed to blow off stea and will now be ontent will have a rude awakenin if the nation returns to business as usual. And there will be neither rest nor tranquility in Aeria until the Nero is ranted his itienship rihts. The whirlwinds of revolt will ontinue to shake the foundations of our nation until the briht day of justie eeres.
But there is soethin that I ust say to y people, who stand on the war threshold whih leads into the palae of justie: In the proess of ainin our rihtful plae, we ust not be uilty of wronful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedo by drinkin fro the up of bitterness and hatred. We ust forever ondut our strule on the hih plane of dinity and disipline. We ust not allow our reative protest to deenerate into physial violene. Aain and aain, we ust rise to the ajesti heihts of eetin physial fore with soul fore.
The arvelous new ilitany whih has enulfed the Nero ounity ust not lead us to a distrust of all white people, for any of our white brothers, as evidened by their presene here today, have oe to realie that their destiny is tied up with our destiny. And they have oe to realie that their freedo is inextriably bound to our freedo.
We annot walk alone.
And as we walk, we ust ake the plede that we shall always arh ahead.
We annot turn bak.
There are those who are askin the devotees of ivil rihts, "When will you be satisfied?" We an never be satisfied as lon as the Nero is the viti of the unspeakable horrors of polie brutality. We an never be satisfied as lon as our bodies, heavy with the fatiue of travel, annot ain lodin in the otels of the hihways and the hotels of the ities. We annot be satisfied as lon as a Nero in ississippi annot vote and a Nero in New York believes he has nothin for whih to vote. No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until "justie rolls down like waters, and rihteousness like a ihty strea."I a not unindful that soe of you have oe here out of reat trials and tribulations. Soe of you have oe fresh fro narrow jail ells. And soe of you have oe fro areas where your quest -- quest for freedo left you battered by the stors of perseution and staered by the winds of polie brutality. You have been the veterans of reative sufferin. ontinue to work with the faith that unearned sufferin is redeptive. o bak to ississippi, o bak to Alabaa, o bak to South arolina, o bak to eoria, o bak to Louisiana, o bak to the slus and hettos of our northern ities, knowin that soehow this situation an and will be haned.
Let us not wallow in the valley of despair, I say to you today, y friends.
And so even thouh we fae the diffiulties of today and toorrow, I still have a drea. It is a drea deeply rooted in the Aerian drea.
I have a drea that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true eanin of its reed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all en are reated equal."
I have a drea that one day on the red hills of eoria, the sons of forer slaves and the sons of forer slave owners will be able to sit down toether at the table of brotherhood.
I have a drea that one day even the state of ississippi, a state swelterin with the heat of injustie, swelterin with the heat of oppression, will be transfored into an oasis of freedo and justie.
I have a drea that y four little hildren will one day live in a nation where they will not be juded by the olor of their skin but by the ontent of their harater.
I have a drea today!
I have a drea that one day, down in Alabaa, with its viious raists, with its overnor havin his lips drippin with the words of "interposition" and "nullifiation" -- one day riht there in Alabaa little blak boys and blak irls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white irls as sisters and brothers.
I have a drea today!
I have a drea that one day every valley shall be exalted, and every hill and ountain shall be ade low, the rouh plaes will be ade plain, and the rooked plaes will be ade straiht; "and the lory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it toether."?
This is our hope, and this is the faith that I o bak to the South with.
With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the ountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith, we will be able to transfor the janlin disords of our nation into a beautiful syphony of brotherhood. With this faith, we will be able to work toether, to pray toether, to strule toether, to o to jail toether, to stand up for freedo toether, knowin that we will be free one day.
And this will be the day -- this will be the day when all of od's hildren will be able to sin with new eanin:
y ountry 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sin.
Land where y fathers died, land of the Pilri's pride,
Fro every ountainside, let freedo rin!
And if Aeria is to be a reat nation, this ust beoe true.
And so let freedo rin fro the prodiious hilltops of New Hapshire.
Let freedo rin fro the ihty ountains of New York.
Let freedo rin fro the heihtenin Allehenies of
Pennsylvania.
Let freedo rin fro the snow-apped Rokies of olorado.
Let freedo rin fro the urvaeous slopes of alifornia.
But not only that:
Let freedo rin fro Stone ountain of eoria.
Let freedo rin fro Lookout ountain of Tennessee.
Let freedo rin fro every hill and olehill of ississippi.
Fro every ountainside, let freedo rin.
And when this happens, when we allow freedo rin, when we let it rin fro every villae and every halet, fro every state and every ity, we will be able to speed up that day when all of od's hildren, blak en and white en, Jews and entiles, Protestants and atholis, will be able to join hands and sin in the words of the old Nero spiritual:
Free at last! free at last!
Thank od Alihty, we are free at last!
